Mason Alexander, a freshman football player at the University of Pittsburgh, was killed in a car accident on Saturday while visiting his hometown of Fishers, Indiana.

According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Alexander was a passenger in a 2016 BMW traveling south on Florida Road.

The driver attempted to pass a Toyota but was forced to swerve off the road to avoid a collision with another vehicle in the northbound lane.

The car veered off the roadway, struck a tree, and caught fire.

The Daily Caller reported that Alexander, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was a standout cornerback at Hamilton Southeastern High School, located near Indianapolis.

As a highly-ranked ESPN 300 recruit in the 2025 class, Alexander committed to Pittsburgh in December, enrolling early with plans to join the team for spring practice in March.

Pittsburgh head football coach Pat Narduzzi released a statement on Sunday, expressing heartbreak over the loss.

“I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher, or coach ever wants to get—the news of the sudden loss of a young and promising life,” Narduzzi said.

“Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander’s passing.”

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the fatal crash occurred around 9 p.m. Saturday near Southeastern Parkway and Interstate 69.

Alexander’s passing has left both his hometown and the Pittsburgh football community mourning the loss of a talented young athlete with a bright future ahead.
